Fabric Cable

Fabric cable is where every light you build yourself begins. With us it's sold by the metre: you order the length, we cut one continuous piece. Over a hundred colours and patterns – round, flat, twisted, zigzag, braided – in cotton, linen, jute and silk effect. Two cross-sections cover everything that hangs: 2x0.75 for double-insulated lamp holders, 3x0.75 with earth conductor for metal. All cables IMQ and HAR tested, shipped across the EU.

Buying guide

Fabric cable is a normal power cable with a fabric covering. Inside are two or three 0.75 mm² wires; outside is cotton, linen, jute or viscose with a silk effect. It can carry a light of up to about 2 kg directly on the cable; anything heavier also hangs from a strain relief.

The most important decision is the cross-section. 2x0.75 is enough for all lights with a plastic or porcelain lamp holder and ceiling rose. As soon as there's a metal part in the circuit, you need 3x0.75 with an earth wire. The configurator picks this automatically; here in the category, both versions are shown side by side.

We supply cable sold by the metre in one piece: order 3.5 metres and you get 3.5 metres of continuous cable. Measure the distance from the ceiling outlet to the lamp holder and add 30 cm for the connection.

How much cable do I need for a pendant light?
Ceiling height minus the desired lamp holder height, plus 30 cm for the connection in the ceiling rose. With a 2.60 m ceiling and a lamp holder at 1.70 m, that's 1.20 m. Better take 20 cm more – you can always shorten it.
2x0.75 or 3x0.75 – what's the difference?
The third core is the earth conductor. It's mandatory as soon as the lamp holder, ceiling rose or shade is made of metal and can be touched (protection class I). With plastic, porcelain or wood, 2x0.75 is enough.
Can I connect the cable myself?
Assembling the light, yes: strip the wires, clamp them into the lamp holder and ceiling rose, tighten the strain relief. Connecting to the ceiling wiring must be done by a qualified electrician. If you want to avoid that, go for a version with a plug.
How much weight can a fabric cable hold?
With the strain relief in the ceiling rose, the cable itself carries up to about 2 kg. Heavier shades and chandeliers get a steel wire or are attached to a load-bearing ceiling rose – the load capacity is listed in the technical data of every ceiling rose.
Is the cable suitable for outdoor use?
Not standard fabric cable. For balconies and gardens there are outdoor cables with a weatherproof covering and festoon cables; both have their own subcategories.
