Home office lighting has a job that living-room lighting doesn't: eight hours of work without fatigue and without reflections on the monitor. Fabric cable lights can do it if three things are right – direction, colour temperature and position relative to the screen.
Position
The light comes from the side, never from behind (reflection in the monitor) and never directly from the front (glare). For right-handers from the left, so your hand doesn't cast a shadow. A pendant over the desk therefore doesn't hang in the middle, but offset 30 to 40 cm to the side, lower edge 60 to 70 cm above the desktop. A wall light with a joint sits to the side at 120 cm and is pointed down at the paper.
Kelvin and lumen
For work, 3000 to 4000 K – more neutral than living-room light, but not cold. 600 to 800 lumens directed at the work surface; with an exposed bulb that dazzles, so a shade or spot belongs here. Dimmable helps in the evening: 3000 K at 40 per cent for the last hour. CRI 90+ matters less for screen work than at the dining table, but it does for paper and colours.
Three set-ups
Spot pendant: single pendant “With spot” – ceiling rose, cable, GU10 spot lamp holder with metal shade, reflector LED 36° 3000 K 500 lm. Focuses the light on an area of 60 cm; for small desks and niches. Also works without a ceiling outlet as a plug-in pendant.
Flex-arm wall light: wall canopy with plug, 60 cm flex arm, lamp holder with spot shade. The arm bends to wherever you're working – over the keyboard, over the sketchbook, towards the wall for indirect light on video calls. Cable runs down the wall to the socket.
Table lamp with shade: concrete base, 20 cm extension, lamp holder with shade ring, 25 cm metal shade, inline dimmer. Classic, portable, no drilling. 80 cm light cone at 45 cm height.
Video conference
For the camera, your face needs light from the front and side, not from above (shadows under the eyes). The Flex arm wall light turned towards your face, dimmed to 2700 K and 30 per cent, replaces the ring light – warm, soft, with no reflection in your glasses if it's positioned 45 degrees to the side.
All three are under Configurator → ceiling lights “With spot”, wall lights “With plug & flex arm”, table lamps “With extension”.
