The first thing you see when you open the configurator for the first time is a question: which setup? Hesitating here costs the most time – yet the choice can almost always be derived from the room and the shape of the table. This guide sorts all the setups and shows the way from an empty configurator to a finished order.
What “lamp configurator” actually means
The configurator builds a light from individual parts that are also sold separately in the shop: ceiling rose, cable, lamp holder, light bulb, cable hook. The difference from buying them individually is the order and the preview – each component is offered to match the previous one (e.g. only lamp holders that go with the chosen cable colour), and a live preview in a room image instantly shows how the combination looks, with the price updating as you go.
Set-up with one outlet
One ceiling rose, one cable, one lamp holder. The classic setup for a single pendant light above the bedside table, in the reading corner or alongside a ceiling light. The least planning effort, fits almost any room and is the right place to start if you're using the configurator for the first time.
Spider with 3, 5 or 7 outlets
One ceiling rose, several cables fanning out in all directions. For rooms with a high ceiling and plenty of open space below: over a kitchen island, a round dining table or as an eye-catcher in the living room. Three drops still look restrained; seven drops fill an entire ceiling area and need the room height to match (from about 2.60 m), so the individual pendants don't crowd into each other.
Beam with several outlets
An elongated ceiling plate, usually with three outlets in a row. Designed for long, rectangular tables – dining table, conference table, long workbench. One drilling point in the ceiling, but the bar has to be aligned exactly parallel to the edge of the table. More on spacing and mounting in the dining table inspiration.
Lamp cage assembly
Instead of a flat ceiling rose, a three-dimensional frame, usually made of metal rods, from which several cables hang in different directions and at different heights. The most elaborate setup, but also the most striking – for rooms where the light alone is the statement: above a bar, in a tall stairwell, in a shop window.
Which setup for which room
- Bedside table, reading nook, hallway: one outlet
- Round dining table, kitchen island, living room eye-catcher: spider with 3 or 5 outlets
- Long dining table, conference table: bar with 3 outlets
- Large, high rooms, restaurants, shops: spider with 7 outlets or lamp cage
For shop fittings and larger quantities, it's also worth checking our B2B terms.
Type within the build
After the build model, the configurator asks about the type – for a pendant light, for example, whether it runs from an existing ceiling outlet or is meant as a plug-in light with a cable to the socket. This decision depends less on the build than on your living situation: in rented flats without a ceiling outlet in the right spot, or if you simply don't want to open anything up on the ceiling, a plug-in light is the better choice. More on this in the article on plug-in lights without a ceiling connection. For wall lights and larger builds like spiders or cages, on the other hand, a fixed ceiling connection is the norm, because the lights are too heavy or too big for a plug-only solution.
A finished light in 5 steps
- 1. Choose the light type: pendant light, wall light or plug-in light
- 2. Choose the build type: single outlet, spider, bar or lamp cage
- 3. Components step by step: ceiling rose, then for each drop a cable with colour and length between 0.2 and 10 m, then lamp holder, then bulb, optionally cable hooks
- 4. Check it in the live preview of the room image – the price updates automatically
- 5. Choose “kit” or “fully assembled”, save the design or order straight away
A saved design can be edited or shared at any time – handy when two people need to agree on a combination, or if you want to browse the lamp holders at your leisure before settling on the build.
